Character Information
*Character Name: Captain Nathaniel Renko
*Character Canon: Singularity (aka, That Time Travelling Video Game)
*Age: It’s never given in-game, but his character model (seen in trailers and concept art) looks roughly in his thirties
*Race: Human
*Timeline/Pull Point: Post-Game, “Third Option” Ending
*History: The Singularity Wikipedia provides a fairly concise synopsis of the plot of the game, in which Renko is the main character. I am also going to provide a link to the TV Tropes page which goes more in-depth as far as the enemies/characters/weapons used in the game, as well as a full Let’s Play of the game, found here. The LP misses a few notes and the like scattered throughout the game, but for everyone’s sanity I will not reprint them; assume they are tragic and soul-crushing in some way.
Of note is that there are three standard endings to the game (with an extra pair of non-standard ones where Demichev shoots Renko in the face to preserve the status quo). While Renko could plausibly have all three of the endings happen to him due to the time loop (discussed below), he went with the final option available: he shot both Demichev and Barisov and disappeared. Russia and its territories, including America, splintered into warring factions to try to decide new leadership. Sort of like every Sith Empire ever. Renko eventually resurfaced with the TMD and became (war)LORD OF AMERICA.
Also of note is that the game strongly implies that this is not the first or even the second time Renko has done everything that occurred in the game. There are messages written in E-99 scattered throughout the game that can essentially be activated and looked at when Chronolight is used on them. Two in particular imply that Renko has done this multiple times. One is a timeline found fairly early on in the game, with hatch marks suggesting this is the seventh time Renko has tried to fix the timeline. A larger diagram is found later on in the game, labeled “The Many Deaths of Me”, where the writer (whom we learn was different versions of Renko at the end of the game) plots out where he went wrong and what went wrong, including Demichev taking his arm in at least one iteration of the timeline. It is feasible that Renko could go through each game ending trying to find the “right” one, knowing that the loop will continue as long as he fails; this is slightly too much of a stretch for a canon version of Renko, even considering how many times he’s done this.
*Personality: Nate Renko tries to be a decent person. He really does. He helps out his teammates (a lot; there are at least four instances in-game where he saves his allies from mortal danger), tries to keep people safe, and even rescues a guy from dying in a fire! Of course, rescuing a guy from dying in a fire led to horrible, horrible things like said guy taking over the world, something that Renko – in various iterations – tries to stop and fix. Over. And over. And over. He even left himself notes about how he just kept screwing up and Stop Changing Things, Dammit. Most of these eventually started getting into the territory of “crazy as the dickens”, telling Renko not to trust Barisov or the organization MIR-12, and one particularly odd message reading “Don’t Trust ME!” It’s likely that now-Renko isn’t particularly mentally stable either; he does feel responsible for Demichev blowing up the east coast of the United States with an E-99 bomb… and for Demichev shooting Devlin in the face… and all those mutated and murdered people on Katorga-12. Basically, everything horrible is his fault and he knows it. Worse, he knows it could probably never get back to the way it had been originally, all because he was a decent guy to the wrong person. Of course, he’s had little time to contemplate this fact since he decided to take over America and eventually the world using the TMD that Barisov helpfully (and probably accidentally) let get welded onto his arm. If you can’t beat them, or change things, become the supreme ruler of the universe, right?
Given all of this, Renko turned into kind of a hardass, as it were. He became a myth before managing to reach America, and as he became the leader of a secret army in America, gained a reputation for being ruthless and disposing of anyone that dared oppose him. It’s possible it’s all a front, and somewhere in there is still a good guy, who just wants to restore order to the world… though it’s also possible that having unlimited power went to his head and he just wants to be the shiny new Demichev, ruling all with a glowy iron fist. Either way, keeping his identity a secret and keeping his forces in line while removing obstacles and gaining more followers means that he is extremely busy, and not quite as focused on his guilt. Without world domination for an outlet, it is probable he will go back to being his normal, seemingly withdrawn self as seen in the game. He is also likely to gain more of an interest in subjects related to time travel, and might attempt to re-create parts of the “Many Deaths of Me” diagram one version of him made, adding in his own theories and thoughts on the issue of Katorga-12’s Singularity and stable time loop… from before it exploded, anyway. He’s probably still hopeful that, even with how wrong everything went, there’s still some way to save everyone without things going the way they did. He simply hasn’t allowed himself to consider the possibility. Really, it hasn’t been a possibility since he left Katorga-12 anyway. But with an unstable rift in space (and presumably time) sitting around and glowing at all hours again…
Renko tends to be extremely practical (if a bit… extreme), whether dealing with combat, puzzles, or trying to fix a situation. Pinned down by Demichev’s soldiers? Turn one into a Revert and watch him shred his former friends! Saves him some bullets and gets the attention off of him for a while. Can’t climb onto this ledge? Grab a box! It’s easier to hop from one to the other than jumping and not making it up. Have to stop Barisov from getting killed by Demichev for the eighth time? Shoot Demichev in the face! He’ll get right back up anyway. This likely drove his decision to remove both the doctor and the Chancellor when it came time to make the choice. Demichev was obviously not the best partner-in-crime, having backstabbed (and occasionally front-stabbed) his way to the top of the totem pole. And as nice as Barisov had been to Renko throughout their ordeal on Katorga-12, what was going to stop him from changing the timeline after Renko shot his past-self in the head? Nevermind how unappealing the thought of shooting ones' past-self in the head is. For all the death and destruction his current path has involved, at least this way he knows what the dictator in power is going to do.
Because the dictator is going to be him.
*Powers/Abilities: Renko is a fairly typical Special Forces soldier, apart from him being fluent in Russian (a trait suggested by fans of the game, due to the English translations of signs on an island that English-speakers were never meant to find). He’s a decent shot and used to being in high-pressure situations. Where things get a bit weird is when you get to the Time Manipulation Device welded onto his left arm. It can accomplish wild and horrible things by harnessing the mysterious element E-99.
The TMD is used throughout the video game to do everything from fighting enemies to solving puzzles, though it naturally comes with some limits to it. It can only affect things that have E-99 in them (the powers Deadlock and Impulse notwithstanding), such as the E-99-infused crates and barrels found all over Katorga-12. It could be said that the reason it affects organic objects such as humans is because organics have trace amounts of the element in them. Many of its powers could not be used on Cybertronians, even if Renko tried, though it will likely affect any organics as usual and have a limited effect on semi-organics (cyborgs etc) due to their blend of flesh and metal. Individual powers and their limits are listed below:
Age - Aging is the first power that Renko gains with the TMD, and it can be used to essentially shift the time period an object or person is in, making them older or younger as a result. It can be rather innocuous, when used to restore boxes or crates infused with E-99 to their original, usable state… or it can be used on people to age them into withered husks at a rapid rate. If activated twice in a row on a human, it activates a different power called Revert, which turns the affected into a blind, melty, flesh-eating monster called a Revert that immediately attacks anything making noise. Renko tends to limit using the Reversion power to combat situations, preferably where he is fighting alone; it’s hard to keep your startled teammates from making noise and catching the monster’s attention. Basically, Reversion is best used when Renko can control most of the variables. Aging can also affect rifts in time by shrinking or enlarging them; this is how Renko does most of his time travelling in the game after the initial anomaly.
Impulse - The first completely combat-oriented power the TMD is capable of. It essentially sends out a short-range burst of energy to knock back anything in its path. Typically only useful for staggering enemies, unless Renko fires it at point-blank range… in which case anything humanoid tends to rip into bloody chunks. When the TMD gained its “unlimited energy” upgrade towards the end of the game, Impulse similarly got an upgrade to Uber-Impulse which would blow just about anyone within about six feet of Renko to bloody chunks and could probably put a dent in even Cybertronians’ armor. Not that he could fire it higher than most of their thighs. It can be downgraded to its regular, weaker version if the Uber version is too ridiculous.
Chronolight/Gravity Manipulation - Chronolight is used to pull objects that are “out of sync” with time into the current timeline. Gravity Manipulation is, more or less, what allows Renko to carry objects regardless of weight in the game, as well as throw back grenades and rockets to whoever threw them at him. He’s just a nice guy like that. Both of these powers mostly depended on Katorga-12’s time experiments and Demichev’s habit of infusing everything with E-99, so they will likely be useless on Cybertron, unless someone randomly starts de-syncing everything from the current timeline or the Lambda drops a bunch of his timeline’s stuff on them.
Deadlock - One of the few powers that both works on virtually everything (since it affects areas rather than objects) and has non-combat applications. This power creates a half-sphere of blue energy about six feet in diameter. Anything within the borders of this sphere is slowed down until Renko dismisses it or the Deadlock destabilizes (which takes about two minutes or so). If nothing else, it should be useful in keeping Renko from being stepped on by the larger residents of Cybertron… and in combatting anything nasty that might come through the rift.
Chronoping - This power is used essentially as pathfinding in the game, briefly showing a set of footprints in blue leading in the direction Renko should go. It’s theorized that these footprints were left by Renko in a past iteration of the time loop; outside of a time loop where he is repeating events over and over, the power is likely about as useful as Chronolight and Gravity Manipulation are, to say “not at all”.
As of its final upgrade, the TMD no longer expends cartridges of E-99, instead automatically regenerating energy even after “expensive” powers such as Revert. Any other weapons that Renko keeps on him are generally for “just in case” situations where it would be more practical to shoot enemies, and to maintain his cover as Generally Normal Man. He doesn’t like risking that someone might recognize the TMD – or worse, try to literally disarm him to get it for themselves.
*Inventory: - The TMD, or Time Manipulation Device. It’s a metal gauntlet sealed around his arm that has a glowy blue thing in it. Its powers are described in more detail in Powers and Abilities.
- The AR9 Valkyrie Assault Rifle, with 144 spare rounds
- His clothes: a white sleeveless shirt, dark grey pants, and a dark grey trench coat; after leaving Katorga-12 he cut himself out of his uniform and found something to better hide the TMD from scrutiny.
*Starting Polarity: I am cool with any of them, but Renko’s shenanigans with time manipulation might lend him to aligning with Vector Prime. He could probably use someone telling him to stop messing around with the time continuum.
If AU, how does your character differ from canon?: (Non AU apps may ignore this question. CRAUs and OAUs should get in to specifics here regarding what changes there are from their character's original canon. We'll need at least a paragraph explaining details.)
Writing Samples
*First Person Sample: Okay. I’ve almost got it. Wait… no. Damn.
[Renko has been… making a mess! Or he would be if the doodling he’s done wasn’t on a couple large sheets of metal. In one corner on one of the sheets is a timeline with two diverging lines on it. The rest of the metal is taken up with a circle that has winding lines coming off of it that look like rivers. Small print surrounds them, but a few words can be made out still. Mostly names: Demichev, Barisov, Kathryn. Also the phrase “ARM???” and “MIR-12?”]
If Kathryn was dead, where was the body… or when was the body, they said there was a rift near the docks, what if it went into the water and hadn’t degraded… Still doesn’t tell me how to fix things anyway, they wouldn’t exist if I did. [He stops for a while, staring at the sheets before twitching the fingers of his left hand; the device on his wrist expels blue particles and “rift under docks?” settles onto the metal. He rubs his chin and then finally looks to the camera.]
Does any of this make sense to anyone? Or do any of you know any more about divergent timelines?
There has to be a way to make this work.
*Third Person Sample: Watching one of his lieutenants drag off the whithered husk of someone he’d only recently been arguing with, Renko has to wonder if he’s going about this the right way. Or at least the most practical way. No, he already knows it’s the only practical way to go about this. They answered to fear before, with the Chancellor, they would answer to fear now. And they have been answering to it… and to awe, which he hadn’t quite expected. He’d heard the talk, though, that he called down the hand of God himself upon his enemies. Well, who was he to correct them? If it convinced others to join his army, it all worked out in the end for him.
“Commander Devlin?” Renko looks up; he’d taken up his old friend’s name to keep his identity undercover. The last thing he needed was other factions and MIR-12 on his ass. Besides, James wasn’t using it anymore. If only he could.
He grunts to acknowledge the name and to ask the man to continue. It was one of his lieutenants, here to tell him the Revert had arrived and would he like to give the speech as usual? Renko had it prepared special for these occasions, all pomp and explaining how Reverts work and ‘I don’t know if I can keep it contained if you can’t help me’. He already knew the two in the cage could, but if they wouldn’t… well. He had others that knew what he wanted, so letting the Revert kill them would be no great loss. Or he might get bored and Revert one of the prisoners and let it eat its former friend.
The Reverts always work, they’re horrible and attracted to sound and the prisoners always make just enough noise to catch their attention.
He pauses for a moment, looking at the man in front of him… watching him twitch back. Is this really what he’s become?
“You know what I need?” he finally asks, the lieutenant jumping in surprise at the sound of Renko’s voice. The pause in speech is long enough that he continues without giving the man more of a chance to answer. “I need a fluffy white cat. And a goddamn handlebar moustache.” He gets up from the chair he’d been sitting in, brushing past the baffled lieutenant.
Back to work.
